Don’t try, but if you’re going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don’t even start.
Can you try something and be successful without having a mindset of determination and self-belief? I’m not sure, I suppose you can but I would argue that the successful result would be more attributable to chance or luck than to the quality of your effort.
We live in a fantastic age where an incredible amount of information is at our fingertips, or retina if you think about it. We all carry an incredibly powerful computer in our pocket or purse with so much more processing power and database access than we could imagine just a few years ago. And yet, how do we use these tools? Do we use them to our personal advantage? And when I say advantage I don’t mean to satisfy our selfish wants like shopping, snooping, or consuming garbage.
What I mean is do we use them to our real benefit? Do we apply their power to gain or advance knowledge that will make us grow as human beings, to become a better version of ourselves, to be better than our ancestors ever were, or to help the common folk as a result? I suppose these are lofty ideals but anything is possible with the power of that little computer and its connection to the internet. And let’s not even talk about AI which has incredible potential to change our life as we know it.
“Do or do not. There is no try” is a popular and very wise phrase by Master Jedi Yoda from Star Wars (I hesitated if I had to clarify the Star Wars connection), who had the benefit of long age and the wisdom that comes from it and great mentors. We have no idea how much time we have left and we will surely not live as long as Yoda, but we have an immense number of mentors available to us… in our own pockets! Just open your phone and check out social media and you’ll see the world trying to be your mentor… and get you to buy something from them or at least double-click a like so the algorithm… Sorry, I digress.
My point is that Social Media is probably not the best place to look for mentors, although we all advertise there in some way, myself included, but at least I try to provide content and not just entertainment or validation. Instead, how about if you try this: look for wise people from the past, saints, philosophers, martyrs, inventors, leaders of men, you name it.
I’ll tell you what, send me an email letting me know what you’re looking for in life and I will personally “hook you up” with a mentor recommendation from our past that will help you get inspired and start doing and stop trying.
Finally, I’ll end this mini post with this, Charles Bukowski’s epitaph said:
“Don’t try, but if you’re going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don’t even start.”
Don’t try, just do. Fully.
