Fueling Your Best Self: Nutrition Strategies for Men on the Go

“Our bodies are our gardens; our wills are our gardeners.”

Guys, let’s face it. Between work, family, and that ever-growing to-do list, life gets hectic fast. Especially for us in the prime of our lives, our 30s through 60s, staying on top of our health often takes a backseat. But here’s the thing – eating well isn’t a luxury, it’s the fuel that keeps us going strong.
I developed this quick simple guide to help us conquer those busy days with simple, effective nutrition strategies. Because feeling energized, focused, and ready to tackle anything doesn’t have to require a complete lifestyle overhaul. Here are some tips you can easily incorporate into your daily routine:
Prep is Key:
Sunday Scaries? Not on our watch! Dedicating an hour on the weekend to prep some healthy staples can be a game-changer. Think pre-washed and chopped veggies, pre-cooked lean proteins like grilled chicken or salmon, and brown rice or quinoa for quick and easy meals throughout the week. Our go-to is Trader Joe’s, just make sure you prep what you’ll consume so we don’t spoil our food.
Snack Smart:
Ditch the vending machine or the gas station stop. Pack healthy snacks that will keep you energized between meals. Nuts, sliced bell peppers and hummus, or a handful of berries are all great options that are portable and satisfying.
Smoothie Power:
No time for breakfast? Whip up a quick smoothie using Greek yogurt, protein powder, spinach, and your favorite fruit. It’s a delicious and nutrient-dense way to start your day. Rita has been working that Nutrabullet for ages and is still going! Here’s a quick simple smoothie recipe that even I can prepare.
Hydration Hero:
We all know that water is essential for every bodily function and yet most of us find it so difficult to hydrate throughout the day. Aim for eight glasses a day, but adjust based on your activity level and climate. Keep a reusable water bottle with you at all times – staying hydrated will keep your energy levels up and your mind sharp. Win-win (don’t forget to wash that bottle often though)!
Mindful Munching:
Eating on the go doesn’t have to mean fast food. Look for healthy grab-and-go options like pre-cut salads with grilled chicken, veggie wraps, or single-serving portioned yogurt parfaits. Remember, Persist and Resist is a key consideration when faced with good and bad choices.
Planning Pays Off:
Don’t wait until you’re starving to decide what to eat. Plan your meals and snacks for the week ahead. This will help you avoid unhealthy impulse decisions when hunger strikes. Sundays are usually perfect days but find what works best with YOUR schedule.
Restaurant Savvy:
Eating out doesn’t have to derail your healthy eating goals. Choose restaurants with grilled or baked options, and don’t be afraid to ask for modifications. Skip the sugary drinks and opt for water or unsweetened iced tea. Here’s a trick: when you walk into the restaurant tell yourself “I’m a guy that drinks water with his meals”. Rinse and repeat and pretty soon you’ll convince yourself to ask for just water!
Small Changes, Big Impact:
Remember, progress over perfection. Start by making small, sustainable changes to your diet. You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel when you prioritize your nutrition.
Bonus Tip:
Incorporate a daily multivitamin to ensure you’re getting all the essential nutrients your body needs. I take my multivitamin, B complex, Vitamin D, and fish oil for that pesky cholesterol.
Fueling your best self is an investment in your overall health and well-being. By following these simple strategies, you can stay energized, focused, and ready to conquer anything life throws your way. Now go out there and crush it!
